Just sold 05 X9 with fiberglass fenders. Didn't have any trouble other than the rubber treads where you step flying off on the freeway and the rubber bezels on clearance lights don't hold the lights in fenders.
We just got a 07 X2 with the aluminum diamond plated fenders, (Nor-Cal boat) I really like the aluminum diamond plated fenders much better. No chipping, no rubber pads ejecting, lights are rivited in and don't fall out. I'm with bjames - Go with the stainless.

Stainless isnt an option for my old trailer, but bondo, sanding, painting and clear coating sure made mine nice again... Add the LED lights, the new guide post covers and custom non-skid pads, here's the result:
