My 2003 MCX was the same.
When I rebuilt the motor I put in gaskests and also used high temp silicone.

Gaskets are not needed when items are new, being smooth and true, when servicing these items gaskets are required, alot of mfgs do this, it cuts down on production costs.

i will get gaskest and fit them seeing as its 9years old now.. one other thing ,the thermostat on this engine was fitted in the bottom housing, ie where it would be in a car not in the top thermostat housing, im sure ive only ever seen the stat fitted under the top thermo housing cover? is this correct ?

ive always thought the reason for the extended housing with the top stat is to allow water to get through the manifolds while the stats closed?

This is informative and answers your question on water circulation in marine engines.
