Red face Mastercraft X7 Steering is Stiff

I replaced my steering cable a few years back..i only have 342 hours on the boat total. The steering is getting stiff again, would this be because the rudder is probably neeidng grease? If so, is their a nipple that a grease gun can use to give it a shot of grease to loosen up the steering so it is back to normal good condition? Just new at this..any help would be very appreciated. Thanks

there should be 2 zerks one for the rudder and one for your steering cable... you have to dig into the bilge and in there and when you grease the rudder grease should come out the bottom of the rudder and at the cable just give a couple of pumps... grease may come back out of the zerk i don't know if that is true for your year or not...

The zerk for the rudder should be on the rudder box housing that sticks up through the hull. On my 197, this is accessible without removing the fuel tank since there's a square access hole in the tank. You will need a flexible extension hose as the straight nozzle shaft on the typical grease gun is too long to get down to the zerk.

Before I re-greased my rudder, I pulled out the zerk and checked that the ball valve wasn't stuck, corroded, etc. Once I was able to verify it wasn't, I replaced the zerk and then shot the grease in as normal. While I did that, I had one of my kids watch the rudder from underneath the boat so he could let me know when grease started to ooze out of the rudder box.

As for the steering cable, I don't know if / where there's a zerk. I do spray grease on the part of the assembly that attaches to the tiller arm and enters/exits the sheath, while having a kid rotate the wheel from side to side.
