78 S&S Fuel Tank & Sender
My fuel tank is leaking pretty bad. I have narrowed it down to the PO installation of the sending unit (Missing screws). Easily fixed by not filling it to the gills but... I dont like it and the boat reaks like fuel when full or approaching full. Also has a vent built into the sender?? about 1/64 hole at the top?
I am thinking about just replacing the whole deal with a new tank and sender (sender doesnt work; only registers 1/2 to empty). Because I have already replaced the line, pump, filter, and the carb is being rebuilt... Why not go the distance? Do it? If so where to buy? What part numbers? Eastern Marine? (The fill is on the drivers side or drivers right) Or just slap some screws in and call it a day (which I anticipate stripped because they are missing?)? I want to pull it anyways to check the hose connections to the exhaust, clean up the wiring, and clean the tank out if I re-use it.... The tank (aluminum) integrity appears ok but I am one to do over the top maint so I can enjoy the summer.... Cj |

There's a thread here of recent that describes the OEM replacement, etc.. including fuel cell, sending unit, pick-up, screen and vent hose. There should not be a vent hole in the sending uint assembly, as far as I am aware. An open source of vapor is not smart. That's why there is a vent hose from the cell to the outside vent opening. You're venting vapors right back into an enclosed or confined space. Gasoline has a low flash point combined with a high vapor density.
What tank is installed? OEM? .

No Tank? But sender
I thought about it over the weekend....
I am going to clean the tank out (friend has an ultrasonic cleaner - BIG). Is this the right sender? Or do I use the cheap one? http://www.skidim.com/prodinfo.asp?number=WEMSSS-9 |

Looks to be the correct part. Be sure and measure your fuel cell depth to fit the length of the tube. I think that one is correct.
If you run into issues with the screen on the end I think Skidim will not have those. Thus I went to Moeller and pleaded my case. They were very helpful. The original is hard as a rock and won't be reusable (unless you're lucky). See what you get into with that before you order, but regardless, DIM was not able to supply that part for me. Make sure you match the correct number of wires also. .
