2nd boat for skiing/barefooting
We have a 2007 x2 and absolutely love it. With a little extra ballast, it surfs great and wakeboards really well. However, I love to ski and would love to get into barefooting more also (before I can't do it anymore). What suggestions, experience does everyone have for a boat that does both well. Old stars and stripes, or prostar (and if so, which prostar). As far as direct drive ski boats, I've only barefooted and slalomed on an older tristar 190. I'm looking for something around or under $10k. Thanks for any advice.

For that price you should grab a 92-94 Prostar 190. Great for both slalom and footing.

Don't know how big you are, but one common issue is the top speed of stock engine Mastercrafts. Many will top out at 43-44 and with a footer in tow might max at 41-42. This usually isn't an issue if you stay off the boom. But longline footing and certainly doing more advanced tricks may require more speed.
Early 90s Malibu Response, or a late 90s Malibu Sportster may suit both needs well. I don't believe the quality is as nice as MC, but this sounds like a "toy" purchase and for slalom, barefoot, and having enough top end speed, IMO these boats would work very well for you. |

Interesting topic...we have a 95 BF200 and just purchased a 94 190...
Having both boats for us was more of a result of water depths that seem to never remain consistent. Up north, the lake we are on is plenty deep to run the BF200 but the rivers down south by our residence have been shallow and therefore the purchase of an inboard was necessary. I think if you look at a 91 to 94 190 or 205, you will be ok. There are a few different engines offered within these years...couple little things to do to the boat here and there will give you the power you need, like prop, etc. The 94 we just bought has the LT1 and with a new prop, will provide whatever power we need...if not, we can foot behind the BF200. Budget wil play a big factor in what you can buy though...

You will need a barefoot boat if you realy want to get into barefooting.

A Prostar with the base engine (240hp) will top out around 41mph with a footer, which is fine... unless youre a big guy, like to foot fast, or need a little extra speed for one-foot stuff. Boats with the HO Ford (92+) or LT1 (93+) will give you the little extra you need, if thats the case. Or the standard Ford engine can be upgraded to HO power levels (and then some) for ~$1500... so that would open up your choices to older boats.

I'm not even talking wake quality, but you NEED to be able to do 45 mph with 5 people on the boat. No deviation of that.
Specially if this is a second boat. |

That being said, some of the best footers I know dont own boats that are that capable- and their progress isnt stunted in the least. They can do some amazing things behind boats that are only good for 41mph with a footer in tow. I would imagine they wouldnt turn down a few more mph (which they could add for a reasonable cost if they were so inclined)... but its not a NEED. It certainly wouldnt be a requirement for someone looking to get into the sport for the first time.

My 92 190 with the 351 topped out at 47, noone in tow and about 5 people in the boat. GPS to prove that speed. I'd imagine even with a footer it would maintain 44-45... If the speed is the biggest thing, reprop it for a little extra speed... that being said, get a power slot, 91-94 prostar for about 6K and have a blast...
