For what it's worth, my flat tappet Ford gets Valvoline VR-1 20W50.

1000ppm is adequate for stock engines, if camshaft is hotter than stock 1200ppm is necessary

I would say that you are right on... north of 1200 ppm of both zinc AND phos are recommended for ALL flat tappet cam motors... stock or otherwise.

Valvoline VR1 (I use 20w50, but all VR1 weights have the high zddp levels)
Mobil1 15w50 (not all weights of Mobil1 have high levels of zddp... so this is a weight-specific recommendation)

^^2 good choices for flat tappet cam oils... I use both^^

I found this at Pepboys on clearance for $4.45 a bottle, so I bought 2.
FWIW, It's not a zinc additive. It's something different, but is supposed to have the same advantages. It's listed as "Better than zinc" and is safe for catalytic converters.

It's a polymer ester... $4.45 a bottle - that's a steel... its a polymer ester that was designed for industrial use...
