Hi there Peter - thanks for the info. I'll keep looking and see what I can find on the need for a bottom nylon washer.

On my '93 ProStar, the rudder disassembly, cleaning and re-lubing worked like a charm. Steering is nice and light at all speeds. So I'm pretty sure my problem was that there was old brittle grease in the rudder and it wasn't allowing new grease to be pumped in. So the only cure there was to clean it out manually.

On my 03 X30 I have had similar issues with steering at speed. Here is where I've been and what my plans are.
I tried to grease the zerk on the rudder port but it wouldn't take any I removed zerk and discovered it was clogged. Purchased and replaced with new zerk and still wouldn't take any grease when installed. Removed and grease flows freely. I removed rudder, installed zerk and grease flowed into rudder port. I installed rudder and the. No grease in port again. I drove for about 15 hours with the rudder halfway greased until it started to get stiff again and the. Y OCD overcame me and I turned to deeper cleaning method. Remove rudder, remove zerk and with the use of a toothbrush I sprayed carb cleaner in the port and began to attempt to clean out the grease groove so that I could get grease to flow from the fixers around the rudder and then out the weep hole under the hull. This still didn't fix my problem. There seems to be some kind of burr in the groove near the zerk fitting preventing it from taking grease. I have now ruined the two O-rings in the port and have just decided to remove the port so I can inspect it on the work bench. If I still can't solve my problem the guys and waterskis.com are going to hook me up with the new port and updated old rudder for my boat. Good luck to anyone with similar issues. Sure wished the previous owner would have given this boat the attention she deserved. Making up for lost time. |

Bump...what is the progress on these projects? Inquisitive mc owners are interested as this is somewhat common to owning a mc long term....thanks

UPDATE;
I have removed rudder port again and soaked it in cleaner and have finally gotten to the point where it will consistently take grease. Thing is, I went ahead and purchased the updated rudder port from waterskis.com. I compared the new to the old and it was crazy how much smoother the updated port is so I just decided to make the improvement. This is where things get tricky if you are going to update your rudder port!!!!!!!!!! The new rudder port is a larder diameter port so you will have to use some kind of file to enlarge the hole. I used a planner bit for a Dremel tool to do it. Now the other trick is the new port has a tad bit larger base and you may need to shave a few MM off the edges to sit up into the recessed hull location. I did. After all this I was finally ready to install my old rudder. Slid it up in the port, mounted the rudder arm and then realized the new port is not only wider, bigger, and also TALLER. So much so it caused arm to cover the coder pin hole. Called SKIDIM and they called Mastercraft and I was informed I would have to also purchase the Updated Rudder!!!! $500 on top of the $250 port. I was at the point of no return since I had altered the port, and my hull. So I made the purchase and have the updated rudder and port. So learn from me fellow Mastercraft owners; New port requires updated rudder also. You can drill a second pin hole in the top of the old rudder but that is kind of sketchy and for what I understand, the rudder is worth the investment. I will let you all know once I get her back on the water in a few weeks. |

On the washer topic,
My 03 x30 had no washer between the rudder and port. The updated port provides a nylon washer between the rudder and port... |
