Stripping a painted boat

Looked at a 1991 Prostar 190 today, price is pretty low, but somebody decided to cover the original turquoise color with an even uglier shade of turquoise "Custom Paint job".

What would it take to strip the boat of the ugly paint and possibly redo the gel in a more desirable color.

The interior also needs to be redone, the carpet is ok but if the whole boat was freshened up it would probably need to be done along with the rest.

I am guessing about 2k for carpet and interior, about 3k to restore he finish another 1500 to do the trailer. The engine transmission etc appears to well maintained and solid though. No test drive yet.

Just scheming to see if I can get the boat for <3k and make it nice for under 10k that seems to be what nice Prostars are going for theses days. I also want to think about what the workload for a winter project like this would be.

Depending on what it was painted with you're probably looking at sanding then Gel coat or more paint. I would think sanding and paint would be the cheapest way to go. Gel coat the more original. All is going to depend on what you actual goal is. You may want to shop around and see if you can find a single shop that will cut you as deal to do the whole thing. Things are still tough up here and a job like yours could fill all kinds of down time if you're not in a hurry.

I am thinking of soda blasting, I saw a local shop that did a corvette and the results were impressive, but I think the strip job would run 1500 or so.

Try wet sanding a small area with 400 grit. The wet sanding with that grit will remove the paint but when you get down to the gelcote it wont cause irrevokable scratches. You just follow up with 600, 800, 1000, 1500, and 2000 then polish and you have sweet looking gelcote.

The only problem is that the 400 may be to dense and clog up quickly making it very expensive and more time consuming. If that is the case you could drop to 250 grit and try again. The water will help remove some of the paint as you strip it away.

Are you sure that the teal is paint? The reason I ask is because I have seen a 1991maristar that was teal and gray.

Those are pretty hot 90s graphics on the side. Only a tribal design could have topped it. One of the problems with going with any of the "what's cool" paint schemes. Sort of like all the flat paint jobs that are being done on cars these days. 5 years from now everyone will be making fun of the dated paint job.
