1978 S&S Steering broken

I have a 78 Stars and Stripes and the steering cable broke yesterday. I was told by a dealer they no longer make that cable and I need a new retrofit kit that replaces everything but the steering wheel. Has anyone ever converted this? I haven't spoken to them yet about pricing, but I'm sure its not cheap. Is there a place to order one online?

Not sure if I should just dump it or not? The boat porpoises so bad over 30mph I ordered a trim plate for it on Thursday for $500, but it hasn't been shipped yet.

Any thoughts, I don't want to sink too much into it and have something else go wrong with it, as it's already pretty old.

I replaced the helm, wheel and cable a couple years ago on my '77. It was a relatively easy job. I got my stuff from SKIDIM. Where in the Midwest are you? I am in St. Paul and would be willing to assist if you are near.

Cable

A replacement cable for your existing system may be available here (But they aren't cheap)

No problem. I couldn't be happier with the performance with my new steering. I can literally drive with one finger when it used to be more like arm wrestling.

Thanks for the pics and the links. I'll be starting on mine tomorrow, I'll post some pics too. I haven't gotten back to the rudder, was it hard to access it?

Nothing to it on my boat. Pull the doghouse and the rear floor section and it's right there. the cable length is stamped into the cable housing at the rudder end. Make sure you check that as Mastercraft used a variety of cable lengths. Having the same length cable makes the project much simpler. You will need the 20 degree bezel kit to install correctly. Vince at SKIDIM gave me that info and saved me some down time. Good luck with your project. Be sure to read all the steps in the directions so you install the cable in the helm properly, otherwise you will take your boat out and find out the steering is backwards

You wouldn't think missing one step would do that.

thatsmrmastercraft,

I referred to your old post when I changed out the steering cable and helm on my '86 this past weekend. Thanks for the insight. The job went very well. Steering feels great on the trailer! One suggestion for Theomedic if I may. If you are replacing the cable and helm and you have an extra $140 you might consider this Steering Hookup Kit from Mastercraft.

You've got it all apart, you might as well finish it. Once you've done that there is nothing left to refresh. Best of luck.

I took a weekend trip to Myrtle Beach and on the way home stopped by SKIDIM to buy a new steering outfit for my 83. Vince and the whole crew there were incredibly helpful, even checking in the box to be sure that it contained the 20 degree bezel (it didn't) before letting me leave. I have the utmost respect for these folks and the way they do business. For those who have not used them, you should give them your next order. First quality is the only way to describe them.

I'd second that. All my steering gear (except for the Hookup kit which they didn't stock), new bilge pump, impeller, etc. came through Richard at Skidim. They got it right the first time. That's important when you're cross border shopping.
