Winch question
I have a 2006 dual axle trailer and I think my winch is stripped-(if I try to winch it up the last few inches in the handle moves without the strap moving and you hear that "it's stripped sound") Do I need a new winch or is there a part to replace??
thanks!!! |

I have replaced a few winch parts over the years and I always end up asking myself why I didn't learn from last time and just buy a new winch.

Couldn't tell you. My '77 is just a little boat comparatively.

check your weight and not "most trailers". 230 is a big mama jamma compared to a 190

I had the same thing happen on our MC 2010 tandem trailer for X2. Teeth on gear were rounded/stripped on one section. Winch was a Fulton XLT rated at 1,800 lbs, single gear. IMO it was under rated according to Fulton website if you consider weight of X2, gear and gas. I contacted Fulton about warranty or replacing gear. Fulton would replace, one time, but suggested upgrading to Fulton 2 3,200 lb capacity which has two gears.
I ended up buying a new Fulton 2 3,200 lb winch and will send in the XLT for a new one and keep as a spare. Sent from my iPhone 4 using Tapatalk

I believe it is your handle that is stripped. I have a 2007 PS 197 with a tower, and my Fulton XLT1800 handle just stripped out. I spoke to the people at Fulton, and was told that that is the weak point on the winch when putting the winch beyond its capacity. They recommended boat weight (including gas, tower, speakers, racks and lights) divided by 1.5 equals the winch capacity. I went with the Fulton XLT2600. Got the winch at the house earlier this week, and the boat and trailer are at the cottage. Now I have to hope that the new winch fits the trailer when I go there next week.

If the winch mounting plate has the same bolt pattern, it is a quick job. If you have to drill a hole or two, it doesn't take much longer. No big deal either way.
