Would water on the engine cause this?

My boat was running perfect then---

I had the floor up degreasing everything, shot some grease in the rudder etc. I hosed down all really good and sprayed the front of the engine off trying to remove grease & belt residue dust of the front of the engine...then the headed for boat ramp.

Boat would not start. It tried to start then back fired into the flame arrestor. Sounded like a really sick motor. This happed a few times then I gave up and yielded to "this boat isn't gonna run today gods" and went on my way.

I thought maybe I got water into the distributor so I popped the cap and all was dry. Very odd...especially since it started with a touch of the key the night before.

Any thoughts?
