New Speed Control w/ short set up?

I recently bought a 1994 190 and have been skiing the course w/o spped control. My question is; the few times I have skied behind boats with spped control, they seem to come up to speed
fairly quickly and then slow to programed speed. My set up is pretty short. It is still a 6 ball course and with practice 34 isnt a problem to drive, but could I have "hot gates" or is this not a legitimate concern. I don't want to spend the money if I am not going to have good results. Also, is there one brand that would be better for the short set up?
