Tower on '85 S&S

Wanted to see if any one has stuck a tower on an older Stars and Stripes. If so what brand, good or bad, and how bad did the gel coat crack? In my experience they always seem to crack.

I have a tower on my 88 procomp. Joystick tower. Loaded with speakers and board racks so its quite heavy.

No problems with cracks on my install. I did make some nice large backing plates out of 3/4" ply to spread the load though.

Also have friends with towers on stars/stripes cira 84 ish and they have no problems with theirs.

If you can get a more angular tower they suit the boat better. Monster towers are great towers and very good value but don't suit the more angular shape of the early mcs.

Good luck.

Dont put a tower on your 85 MC, boats back then were not designed for that at all! The tower would just be drilled into the fiberglass, which is not good at all. All the new boats are all reinforced for towers. I would highly recomend a highpole, it gets the job done, and you don't as much of a risk damaging the gunwail of the boat, of the stringers.

Funnily enough Joystick make joystick towers!

As for gelcoat cracks I cant comment on a 85 but on my boat there is no cracks and I have a lot of weight on my tower too (racks, speakers etc).

If installed correctly you should minimise any possible spider cracks.

85 mc tower

I put a tower on my '82 S&S and have logged 40+ hours riding since and I don't have any cracks.

Good results or bad, SKI*MC hit the nail on the head. Eventually you'll see cracking, structural degradation, and will need repairs.

These old school boats are still very reliable and functional but they were made for slalom, trick, and jump by the intent of the variable planing hulls.
