kids and skiing

My grandchild will be 7 this summer, I would like to begin teaching him to ski. He is a little afraid of the water, even though he can swim. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to help him overcome his fear and if you have suggestions on techniques used to teach children I would be interested in that as well. I have not been skiing long myself.
Thanks
