tach reading low

tonight i finally decided to tune up the old engine- can't weem to get max rpm's out of her. So, I hook up the old timing light, and I notice the tach on the timing light is reading about 250rpm higher than the one in the dash. It did this all the way to 3000 rpm. Question is, has anyone else had this problem, and if so, do you know of a way to calibrate it? All connections are good, so I think it is in the tach. Thanks in advance.
