Smart Key??

So my significant other buys a new Nissan a year and a half ago and the salesman goes on and on telling me about the smart key. I'm thinking "this is stupid, how am I going to keep track of where the hell my key is. With my truck the key is in the ignition when I need to lock it or whatever". 6 months later I watch some lady in a Mercedes driving down the street at about 30 mph with her keys on the roof. So today I drop my truck off for service and the wife picks me up. I drop her off at home and go to work. Shut off car and look for smart key in console. Not there. Try to start car. Won't start, key not detected. ***? This is the dumbest thing I could ever imagine. (Key is in her purse - with her at home) Fortunately I work a mile from my house and will get a ride there to grab the key. But really, what if I worked in the city, or we were going on vacation and key was hanging in house, or any other circumstance. What on earth is the benefit to this so called smart key!? Thanks for letting me rant.

My wife has one and she is always running back to the car when I am driving and I try to drop her off at the store for a quick stop... Funny as heck!

My wife's 4runner has one of these, but there is a chime/beep if the smart key is removed from the vehicle with it running, but it only chimes/beeps a couple of times.

I am not sure it would let you lock the doors from outside with the smart key if you had one inside the vehicle???

It won't according to the salesman.

Talking here in the office and one guy has a smart key and if it is removed while the vehicle is running the entire display board glows a different color or something.

I really don't "get" why they make these things.

My wife has the smart key and it's pretty slick for her. Never leaves her purse. Whenever I jump in the drivers seat, I insist on seeing and holding the key so we don't end up somewhere stranded! It does make a decent series of beeps, and also has a key icon on the cluster.

That's the way my mom's Mercedes is. It tells you if that key is not inside the car and turns the dash red with a key symbol.

I've not screwed with my dad's new tahoe, but I do know that the car honks 2 times if you turn the car off and leave the smart key inside. I'll have to see what it does if you take the key out of the car after it starts.

Personally, I love the smart key. Not so much for starting (it's not tough to put a key in and turn), but it sure makes it easier when you are holding stuff to just open the door or tailgate, rather than dig through your pockets or purse, if you are into that sort of thing!
