1997 Prostar 190: which engine ?

Hi,

I need your expertise . I bought a 1997 Prostar last spring and always assumed it had a standard Ford 351 engine. But I am a bit confused now: the "1995-97 ProStar 190/19 Skier/SportStar 19/ ProStar 195/X-5: A History" thread mentions that they came standard with the TBI 275 horsepower (350 ci) engine (1:1 transmission) ?

And my HIN is MBCUS.....07. If I am not wrong, the U stands for a 351 High Output (and not standard). Am I correct ?

Thank you very much for your help !!!

HIN Decoding

From what I understand the "U" in the 4th position of the HIN code means its a 6.0L GM Block w/1:1 drive ratio. On the older MC's you are correct it would be a Ford 351 HO (not standard) w/ 1:1 drive ratio.
You can also tell the difference very easily by looking at the location of the distributor. Ford 302 and 351 distributors are located on the front side of the carburetor closest to all the cooling hoses and belt driven accessories and GM distributors are located behind the carburetor. If your motor is fuel injected the Ford intake design is very distinct looking as it bends to the left side of the motor if you are facing it from the front of the engine and a GM intake looks very plain jane

Hope this helps!

IIRC, the 351 wasn't available in 1997. Take a picture of the engine and we'll tell you what it is in 2 seconds.

1997 Prostars were only available with GM 350s. Either the standard TBI or the optional LT1.

Thanks Brian. It is the exact same same as yours, I guess I can trust you . And a very last one if I may: could you confirm that this 1997 GM 350 is a roller cam, not a flat tappet ?

Thanks again !!!

The TBI was a flat tappet cam. LT1 was roller. It wasn't until 98 that Indmar went to a roller block with the TBI.

What you have there is the GM 350 TBI 275hp.
