'79 Steering Cable replacement / conversion

My steering cable went out tonight. I've seen posts regarding replacing the existing cable, or doing a rack and pinion conversion. I would appreciate any information regarding my options. Time, cost, and complexity would be extremely helpful. I've restored two Jeeps, so I'm not scared to get greasy. Thanks, Erik

One more thing I forgot to ask - what length of cable should I be using for either replacement or conversion to rack and pinion? This is my first inboard, so I am still on a learning curve. Thanks again, Erik

skidim.com should have all the answers regarding the cable you need. They are very helpful.

for the length it is printed on the cable, I think its a 13, but MC was all over the board during those years. The old cable you will be replacing will be more than a new helm. Go with a tilt wheel if possible, I wish I had. A rack and pinion will work but I know the rotory system ski dim sell is just fine. You will have to open up the existing hole a little so don't be alarmed.
