96 vrs 225 v drive drive shaft key

I had to replace the key that holds the top of the drive shaft to the vdrive. However it keeps popping out (seems like when I surf only) weighted heavy to one side, should i be packing the key with grease? Do I need to really pound it in? Thanks for your help...
