2001 X30 Loss of Power - Safe Mode?

Just bought a 2001 MC X30 with the MX LTR 5.7L engine. We took it out yesterday and it ran great for about 3-4 hours. Then it seemed as if some sort of Guardian Mode kicked in and would not let me rev above about 1500-2000 RPMs. I had to idle about a half mile back to the ramp and put it back on the trailer.

I went through many of the posts on here about fuel pump, fuel filter, vapor lock, water in the fuel etc and then ran across a thread about using the paperclip and check engine light to check the codes. I ran the test and all I can get out of it is a Code 12. I posted a vid of my testing if anyone can confirm my understanding of the light flashes of the Check Engine Light.

You can checkout the vid at http://justtesting.biz/mc01/vid001.3gp

If anyone has other tips to help troubleshoot, I would love to hear them.

Thanks..................Terry

IIRC, Code 12 on MEFI 3 and MEFI 4 is just a confirmation that the diagnostic process is online.

The paper clip trick isn't a universally applied tool across the Delphi ECU line. Doing that on later models runs the very real risk of totally frying the ECU.

Can someone here verify if the paper clip test is safe to do on the Indmar LTR for an 01' x30? I too have an engine light one and was going to test it tonight using the mentioned method.

I have a 2000 Prostar with the LTR motor and have done the paper clip test, however I used a fuse jumper instead of a paper clip. Don't know if I needed to, it just made me feal better.

My x30 with the LTR puts itself into "lymph mode" (what I call it) whenever the alternator fails and the battery levels are too low to run the engine. It also did this so me last year when the main breaker on the engine (near the diagnostic connector) went bad.

This was exactly the cause of all my issues. Took the alternator to a local rebuilder and he told me I had an old Prestolite 55 amp and that it was old technology. He upgraded me to an 80 amp and confirmed that all of my current wiring would handle it. I also purchased two new batteries at the same time and now everything is working like a champ! Thanks to everyone for your help and support. We are out on the lake tomorrow!
