82 stars & strips having issues re starting?
Hey all,
Hopefully you can answer my question. The 1982 MC stars & strips i am looking at runs great, starts fine, but once we go for a couple of ski runs and then turn off the engine it has a hard time starting back up again. Have to wait 10-15 min or so for it to start up again. The owner is not sure what the issue could really be, he said it just started doing this. besides that the engine is very clean, any ideas on how i can resolve this issue?? Thanks in advance! |

Start with the basics:
Spark plug condition- how old? gap correct? correct plug? color on plug is tan, grey, black??? Dist cap & rotor condition- how old? crack in cap? all fuzzy inside? Electronic ign conversion or points? how old are points? dwell setting? Spark plug wires.... Is timing set corrrect to spec? Fuel filter- how long since its been changed? What is your restart technique?

Does this one have a vent in the back of the engine cover?
82's did not come from the factory with a vent in the back of the engine cover. The vents were supplied to the dealers to solve a problem with vapor lock.

Thanks for all the quick feedback.
I definitely would have to go through and check all of that was mentioned. I dont have the boat in my possession yet, just trying to see what the issue could be before i buy. The boat is too clean overall to pass up. This model does not have vent on the engine box, do you think this would help? |

It sure can't hurt. There can be a lot of heat build up when the engine is shut off. The problem is magnified if the engine still has points, an original style starter, any worn ignition parts, weak battery and/or connections, carb out of adjustment.... With that said, sometimes they are a bit of a bear to start hot. With mine, it often times needs about 1/2 throttle then fires right up. It can be just getting to know what the engine wants. Kind of like starting an old car - they all had their own personality that computers and fuel injection has removed in today's cars and boats.

If you suspect vapor-lock to be the cause, you could open the engine cover next time you shut it off warm to allow the heat to escape. If it starts fine, you probably found the problem.
