new ps190 owner w/ a few issues

Hello, looking for some help with a couple problems. I have a 1993 25th anniversery model,ps190 with the 351 ford motor. 1st issue, what is the proper operating temp, mine runs at about 130 degrees, that seems a bit low. What temp thermostat should be in there? 2nd issue, the motor dies at idle untill you rev it up a little after starting it, then when you put it in gear it does the same thing if you dont give it a throttle bump. I set the idle up just a bit so I could pull skiiers/boarders last weekend without constantly restarting the motor. I know thats not the fix. Thinking the cold temp may be at least part of the problem. Once underway at speed if you slow down to idle speed the motor continues to run but if you shut down for even a minute it's back to the rev rev thing. HELP! thanks in advance, Kevin

Welcome, Kevin. I am assuming you have the 351 HO (285 hp). If so, I'll bet you have the Holley 4010 carb (dual fuel feed on the starboard side of the carb). They are junk in the marine application and are notorious for this awful idle you are experiencing. Rebuilding didn't help in my case. Replacing with a Holley 4160 did.

My 93 ran at 160 warmed up.

Hey, I have one of those boats also. the std thermostat is 143 degrees. Operating temp depends a fair amount on water temp. if you are in cool water, i.e.less than 75 degrees, 130 operating temp may be OK. Mine runs around 130-140 depending on water temp and how hard we are running it.

for the idle, check your electric choke setting.

Also, if you have the 4010 carb with two fuel inlet tubes, this carb is notoriously troublesome, especially at idle. many people on here have changed to the 4160 carb. (others, check that I got the 4010/4160 right)

Idle should be at 650 rpm when not in gear.

plugs, wires, cap, rotor also affect performance.

show pics. is it blue, red, or platinum?

welcome, sounds like you have a great boat. pretty rare too.
They are beautiful!
Think the 4160 will help all your problems. the 4010 is known for having some issues mainly with warm starts.

Congrats on picking up a great boat. As for the running problem, don't forget the basics: Spark plugs, dist. cap & rotor and plug wires all need to be in working order.

With that said, changing out that 4010 Holley with a 4160 sounds like a must whether its the source of this problem or the next.

I was wondering if it had the crap carb, I was reading some other posts and starting thinking maybe, but was hoping not. Guess I get to buy a new carb(YAY). Just bought the boat last week, has just a few minor issues to work out, other than that she is GREAT. She is blue with thin red stripe mayo. In excellent condition, will post pics at some point, thanks for the help.

If he has a 351, it's doubtful that it's the 25th Anniversary Edition Pro Star 190 Limited. All 93 Pro Stars had a "25 Years of Excellence" sticker on the side glass. So many people refer to these as "anniversary" models even though most of us who spend way too much time on this forum think of "anniversary models as the limited production runs, such as :

20 in 88 of the Platinum Pro Star
25 in 93 of the 190 Ltd.
30 in 98 of the Stars & Stripes 190
35 in 2003 of the Stars and Stripes 190/197

... and so on.

Lots of people also refer to the 93 Stars & Stripes 190 as an "anniversary model." In reality, it was a $750 or so option available through July 1993 as opposed to a limited production run.

All the same, these are just labels. I have a special place in my heart for all the 93 Pro Stars. Amazing and beautiful ski boats.

I, too, would love to see some pictures.
