Fuel Pump Issue???

Hey - I'm having problems with my 96 Prostar EFI. The boat idles fine, but it seems to hesitate when throttled down. Has the feeling like it is running out of gas - Which leads me to believe it is the fuel pump.

Any thoughts from anyone?

Any recommendations on where to pick up a fuel pump (and what type) at a decent price?

Thx guys

ch

do a search - you'll find tons of threads here on that.

My guess, is the screen on your pump is clogged. Happened many times to my '95 PS190.

The pump is on the passengers side, rear of the motor. You'll need to pull the pump off. then, take off the fitting at the inlet. Inside there, is a screen. My money is that it's full of debris.

Is this a new issue? Are you throttling down hard or gradually? The TPS's role in this is to tell the ECM when the throttle position changes are gentle or drastic and if it moves more than 20% toward idle, it reduces fuel delivery to allow deceleration (maintaining fuel at the same rate will flood the engine when the throttle is open less). The IAC also follows the throttle and if it's sticking closed, it will act like it's choking. Next time this happens, open the throttle a little to see it if changes the symptom. Check the flame arrestor, too- if it's dirty, it can act the same way.

I'll say it again- DO NOT REPLACE PARTS WITHOUT TESTING THEIR FUNCTION FIRST!!!!!! Unless you know the fuel pressure isn't correct, replacing the fuel pump will only waste money. If you have no problems with acceleration, it's not the pump.

By any chance, when you wrote 'throttle down', does this mean that you're trying to accelerate? That's not throttle down. Just trying to make sure we mean the same thing. If this is happening on acceleration, it could be the pump but I would recommend checking the screen and if the filter is more than a couple of years old, change it. The tank has a fuel pickup tube, too and this may be clogged.
