Another Exhaust / Noise Thread

My 454 is loud at speed and at times, the noise will actually resonate through the hull. Sounds great at times but, I am sure that if a pair of any type of mufflers were installed, the noise could be tamed and the noise issue resolved.

I know there is only so much you can do to quiet down a noisy 454. Anyone here had any great success stories? Can you recommend a muffler that will fit in this boat and quiet it down significantly?

Thanks in advance - i don't want to throw money at this problem if it isn't going to have a significant impact, but I am willing to tackle this if it yields a good reduction in noise.

You probably, do have a brokens baffles. A coffee can size piston, pushes a bunch of air.
Conventional baffles probably to small. Has anyone, tried using a x-pipe cross over?

With exhaust flowing thru, two pipes per pulse, exhaust flappers should not open as big. Thus, reducing sound. I doubt, it would reduce sound, by half, but should be interesting project.

i have an 08 xstar with L18 and dual in-line mufflers. it is still loud as the devil. i hate it. i have to crank the stereo up so loud that it is unpleasant. there seems to be no real solution for the L18 as back pressure issues prevent too much restriction. bummer.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys - I was sort of secretly hoping someone would post "I really quieted my boat down with xyz muffler setup" but I'm guessing that's just a dream :-)

the old style single transverse mounted muffler was the quietest but it made changing the impellor nearly impossible.

That totally confuses me. The exhaust goes out the back. The impeller is in the front. How can it make it hard to change?

V-Drive.

Silent Master exhaust on some V-drives made changing the impeller a PITA.

Oh yeah; I guess that's what you get for folding your drivetrain in half :-)
