I was reading through the thread and was thinking the same exact thing. My 77 is down to the flake also. Imagine you would mask the other gel. I have to replace the pinstriping, so that might be a good option to clear up to/under where the new pinstripe will go.

Hopefully someone will chime in...

Jim did a great write-up on his restoration. Somewhere in here are some details about when he clear coated his flake.
