Black dust from belt -- any help?

I've been cleaning fine black dust from my engine every year and am getting sick of dealing with it. I know the dust is coming from the belt and I replaced the original belt which had worn badly, but since then the belt has worn nicely. I don't hear any squealing, etc. indicating slipping and don't see any uneven wear on the belt.

Any suggestions of what might be causing this other than the wrong belt? I have an 88 PS 190 and am pretty sure I have the right belt -- 15/32 x 44.5 with a 38 degree V. Can anyone out there confirm or correct me on this?

Thanks, Chuck

I have an '83 with a Pleasurecraft 351. I have owned it since '84. The belt has always left black dust on the engine.

My 81 does this as well, I took it as normal wear and tear. On a car engine the dust is blown away and never noticed.

How smooth are your pulleys? If they have surface rust, even though it may not look like much, it is really abrasive and beats the crap out of the belt.

That was one of my thoughts, Jim. The pulleys were originally painted and it looks like some of that has worn off and there is a little rust. Any recos on what to do -- paint them, shine them up, etc. Given that it only runs 7 mo out of the year, I'd guess that if I don't paint them, I'll get rust again after the winter unless I oil the surface of the pulleys before I lay it up. And of course oil isn't going to help the belt grab any better...

I havent seen a PCM 351 that dosent have this issue. I just wipe off the dust every week or so and replace the belts every 2 or 3 years.

My last boat had a 351 PCM and the same issue. Everything lined up the way it should, no rust,. I ended up using Powerslot82s method..

This is definitely normal wear as my 84 S&S does the exact same. No way around it unfortunately.

I just don't worry about the dust, but i don't have too much. If the belt tension isn't correct there could be some slip of the belts thus causing more than average dust. There's also a few products out there that prevent belt squeal (some kind of belt grease i think) it also keeps the belts fresh (prevents cracking). It might also prevent some dust, or it might just make more of a mess
