Removing shifter knob

I have an 02 X-star, and want to replace the shifter knob. The chrome is peeling, and is kinda sharp.

Ive tried to turn it to get it off, but is pretty firm on there, and i didn't want to break it.

Do i just need to torque it more, or is there a trick? also can anyone tell me where to get an aftermarket that will fit my shifter?

thanks!

Ben

I've seen shift knobs in skidim.com, overtons.com, bartwatersports.com, westmarine.com, boatbandit.com. There may be a set screw holding the knob on the lever. Or it may be glued onto the lever.

Not sure about your particular boat, but I think they are all threaded. I expect you can just turn it harder. Perhaps you can ice down the handle so that the male threads contract some. Or maybe you can spray some lubricant under there. Mine (1994) came off very easily for the first time recently.

Skidim sells knobs, but there are some more expensive ones that have been posted on here before. You might want to search it...

EDIT: Didnt see Skipper's post before I posted.

Yup, twist it off. I always liked to look of a simple stainless shift knob...

Back when I was showing my boat at the reunions, I put a crystal knob on my boat. Turned out pretty cool. Wish I had a pic of it.

Does anyone know what the thread is on the shifter? I want to make my own knob as I have access to a machine shop.

No, but can't you just take yours off and use a gauge to measure it? Any tap and die kit will have guages

Mine just unscrews. I have seen the thread and i'll bet it is 1/4-20. An easy way to check is to pull the knob and carefully screw in a wakeboard boot screw; they are 1/4-20. I know this because our bimini screws are 1/4-20 and they are the same as the wakeboard ones. A nice feature if you drop a bimini screw in the water.
