I've always wanted a Mastercraft and just bought my first!!!! A 1991 Prostar 190. I was told it had a Chevy 350, but I'm inclined to believe that it is a Ford 351. How do I know for sure?? Did Mastercraft put Chevy engines in 1991 Prostars?? Everything I am finding online lean toward Ford 351's.

They switched to Chevy's in 1994, some 93's had the LT1 Chevy as an option.

You most likely have a Ford.

Distributor at the front of the motor is ford 351. If it does not have a carb then someone has swapped the motor along the way. My 93 205 had a 351, carbed. My 95 has a LT1 fuel injected, says corvette on top, Love it.

Chevy valve covers bolt through the top of the cover and down the middle of the valve cover. Ford valve covers bolt on the flange around the outside of the cover.

What you got there is a "boat motor".
![]() If the distributor is in front, it is a Ford. In back, it is a Chevy.

Yep, the original brochure I've seen for my '89 referenced the 350 as an option. 10-20 more HP over the 351 I think. Can't remember the upcharge for the 350, but I think I've seen it on here somewhere. Out of curiosity, does anyone have a guess as to the approximate number of first generation pro-stars that had a Chev 350? Were the S&S available with a 350? Anyone ever been in one of each on the same day? Just curious on the differences in sound, hole shot, top speed, etc. I'd expect it to not be much different, just curious.

I have ridden/skied/drove a '84 19 Skier and a '88 Platinum ProStar with the 350 and there wasn't that much difference if any. The only reason the owner had the 350's was he hated Fords and wouldn't have anything else and had the $ at one time to buy the boats at the boat shows and had them sent back to the factory to be swapped out. |
