first mastercraft with some questions

whats up guys, i just bought my first mastercraft . i think i got a pretty good deal its a 85 s&s with all new interior for 3500 bucks. however there is a few things wrong with it. nothin big but does anyone have any advice on re-lubricating the output shaft? Also is there a certain fuel sender for the fuel gage? will just a basic one from like napa work? Thanks, josh

Congrats on your MC! Can you clarify about lubricating the drive shaft. Typically, the drives shaft seal has a rope packing and when your boat is in the water the seal will drip a couple of times every minute - this water acts as a lubricant. Check out one of the dealers on this site- Jim @ Bay Area Water Sports is in Florida or you can look on the web at skidim.com, they carry the packing rope and also there are dripless replacement seals. Depending on the transmission ratio of 1:1 std (1/4"rope), 1.5:1 Powerslot (3/16" rope), here is a link to two types of shaft packing, http://www.skidim.com/products.asp?dept=1032, plus the dripless shaft seals if you prefer to go that route.
As far as the fuel gauge sending unit, yes it has an in tank unit. I would get one from one of these two locations, http://www.skidim.com/products.asp?dept=1088 and http://www.isspro.com/products.php?cat=101, rather than relying on a generic auto parts replacement.

PS, always be sure to call customer service for particular item to be sure it's truly the right one you need.

Hi everyone and respect to the MC fraternity. Just bought 1995 prostar 190 had a few silly newbie questions need help with:
1. previous owner was not sure how long gas had been in engine supposedly 30 plus days, is there any way to verify if the gas is good or bad before starting the engine and causing probs?
2. oil on dipstick looks black, what type of oil should I use to replace with the best money can buy?
3. the previous owner says that the engine is a chevy engine? the only obvious things I can see are : black engine , with blue text EFI on it can anyone tell me which engine this is original or not, and is there a link to the engine break down and maintenance?
4. the hull is in good condition, just at the bottom of the bow I guess where the boat was beached the gel coat is gone and I can see brown/gold fiberglass looking coat, with what and how should I repair this or is it ok to leave it like that?
5. the prop looks to be original three blade, two blades have tips bent a little, no cracks or tears, is that ok, and if not can it be repaired or not worth it and does the type of prop effect the wake ? since we will be wake surfing and boarding ?

1. No good idea.
2. Delo or Rotella 15w-40 are high quality oils that will work fine.
3. It's a Chevy 350 marinized by Indmar. If you start at the main Mastercraft page, click on the "Knowledge Center" tab, and then "Owners manuals", you can find the 1995 Prostar 190 Owners manual.
4. Sounds like the gelcoat has been worn through, and you're down to the fiberglass. Probably should get that fixed or fix it yourself. Spectrum Color is well regarded, and can match the gelcoat color.
5. Sounds like minor prop damage. It'll cause a bit of vibration, and you'll probably want to get it straightened at some point. Your alternative is to get a prop more suited to surfing and boarding, and keep this one as a spare.

Your trailer, uh, needs a little work. I can't put my finger on it, but maybe the color should be changed?

If I were you I'd get it sandblasted and put a nice coat of black enamel on it.

Nice boat, Josh! I myself, am not a big fan of black but, it really works well on your boat! I love my S and S and paid well more than $3,500. for it. You did well!
