Mobile 1 synthetic
Someone told me I could use Mobile 1 synthetic oil once my X Star reached 100 engine hours. Is this true? If so, how often would I need to change it when running synthetic?

I run M1 syn always and in everything. The main reason is not so I may extend time between changes but to have added protection in case of an overheat. All oils get dirty and carry contaminants. Don't change your service frequency, change your oil, spend an extra 7 bucks and have an oil that will protect your engine in case of a clogged strainer, fried impellor or what have you much longer than dino can!
![]() Two things tell you alot about your engine. Plugs and Oil! Stay with the recommended scheduled service frequency.

Indmar says you can use synthetic oil after the engine has 100 hours on it. Nothing wrong with Mobil 1 - it's good stuff. Pointless to use in a boat over standard 15W40, but it's your money and if it buys you peace of mind, go for it.
As to drain intervals, they're the same whether you use synthetic or mineral oils. The problem isn't shear stability (oil breakdown) - there is little or no advantage synthetic vs the group II base stock oils that virtually all of the CI-4 oils use. The problem is soot, carbon, and acids. Synthetic has no significant detergent advantage, hence the drain intervals remain the same.

Good thing he does not work on engines! Hey BM! Deja Vu!
I only use syn because of the added protection when temps rise and in a boat they will. Weeds, impellor or what have you it is not a contained system and is prone to failure. Dang Mac I do like how you talk though!![]() PS I do agree in a controlled environment with regular service intervals you can use Dino but a boat using water from a lake and an impellor is in no way shape or form controlled. So if your engine was to bake what do you want in it? Mine has had syn since new, delivered that way, and there is absolutey no sludge or carbon anywhere. Ask me how I know? Quote:

I say at this juncture its all square, mac has not answered the heat question and HB has not answered the sheer stability issue.
