This ever happened to you?? (share a terrifying experience)

While motoring around the lake today, the cover for the impeller housing fell off!!

Here is the story...

We were putting in our club ski course this morning, which involved idling around the lake for about 2 hours (it should not take this long, but it is a POS, that is another thread...). Get it all finished in time for it to start raining, we decide not to ski but while we are there I do a couple of passes just to make sure the magnets are all working and etc.

All done, back to the trailer. As I am idling up to the trailer I notice the motor is making a strange noise. I pull up on the trailer and decide to have a look before we pull the boat out. Open the lid and to my horror the impeller housing has somehow worked its way off. All four screws and the housing were sitting in the bilge!!!!!!!!!!!!

I pulled the impeller (brand new a few weeks ago) it looked just fine, no cracks, no discolorations. I happened to have an extra seal in the boat so I tossed that on there and screwed the cover back on. The temp was a bit on the warm side (reading 180-190) when we pulled on the trailer. I went ahead and backed it off and idled in a few circles and it cooled back down. Everything else checked out ok, no junk or water in the oil, seemed to run fine afterwards.

I have never heard of this happening, and it scared the living crap right out of me!!

I may have dodged a bullet today.

Anyone have any similar stories they would like to share?

Happened to me once. Though my impellar was toasted so would assume the deobri caused it. Maybe it wasn't tightened enough and the vibrations loosened them up?

That is what I am figuring. The inlet to the tranny cooler was clean too so the vibrations had to to it. I will be keeping an eye on these screws for awhile. I can see one or even two screws popping loose but all 4, it seemed unreal.

A tiny drop of Loctite on each screw never hurts either.
