Quick help: what's wrong with this ballast pump?

I'm out at a 3-day family reunion and suddenly my center ballast (04 X30) wasn't filling. Pulled out the ballast puppy and it was chewed up...in a a strange way. Pretty uniformly chewed up on each fin. I replaced it with another one I had on hand but cannot figure out why it would be doing this. Any thoughts on what's causing this?? I'll be testing it out again tomorrow when we get back on the water.

TIA.

Debris sucked up into the pump. Or a piece broke off the impeller and got wedged or something

That is weird. Did you check to see if there were any burrs inside the pump housing?

The markings really look like it sucked up a small stick or similar piece of debris. If there was nothing in the pump housing it was probably broken up and pushed into the ballast tank or back to the through hull. I'd do a quick visual check of the strainer and go on with business as usual since you've already replaced the impeller.
