LTR's Oil Pump Drive Gear

Since checking the oil pump drive gear at the "oil change interval" is recommended, does anyone know how this is done?

Reply All LTR engines oil pump drive gear -
Reports have been recieved of premature wear of the oil pump drive gear on LTR engines. Loss of the oil pump drive gear will cause the oil pump to cease functioning and may result in the failure of the base engine.

Indmar suggets pulling and inspecting the oil pump drive gear as part of the recommended service performed at the first engine service (10-20 hours) and at each subsequent oil change interval (every 50 hours).

Because the LTR does not have a distributor, there is a plug in its place. Remove the bolt and retainer where the distributor would be and pull the plug straight out. On the end of the plug is the bronze gear that needs to be inspected for wear. MC sent out a letter with pictures, but they are hard to see. Basically, the teeth on the gear should have crisp edges and the teeth should be straight, not worn over. To reinstall, align the opening in the bottom of the gear with the shaft down inside the engine, or it will not go in all the way. It takes a few tries to get it where it will fit back in properly. Replace the retaining clamp and bolt.

I'll email you the service letter.

Kyle, emailed it. It's easy, takes all of 5 minutes, just be patient trying to get it back in correctly.
