Pulley Removal

I am going to be replacing the pulleys on my 94 350 because the chrome has come off and the pulleys are rusting and eating my drivebelts. The waterpump pulley comes off no problem, but the Alternator pulley is giving me fits. Does anyone have any tips to get thsi pully off? I have used PB Blaster and tried to use and old belt to keep it from spinning, but no luck. I could use a chain wrench to keep it from moving, but I don't want to damage the pulley. Skidim said that they need to know if the pulley is keyed or not, and I have to pull it to find out. I still want to use my boat until the new pulleys come in so I definitly don't want to damage anything.

Also, I haven't attempted to take the raw water pump pulley off yet, any one have anytips for that?

Your pulley is keyed to the alternator shaft. You should have a prestolite 55Amp alternator.

OK, I'll clarify. I can't figure out a way to keep the pulley from spinning so that I can remove the nut that secures the pulley. If I didn't mind destroying the pulley, I'd just pully the alternator and stick the pulley in a vise and loosen the nut. I could also try a chain wrench, but that would also damage he pully. Fortunately, Engine Nut was kind enough to give me the information that I was hoping to get by taking the pulley off. Thanks for the info Engine Nut.

Now anyone have any tips for the raw water pump pulley. How do I remove the pump from the pulley?

I use a 3/8" pneumatic impact wrench to remove the pulley nuts on alternators. Use a rag to hold the pulley/air fins, make sure your air wrench set in the unscrew direction and pull the trigger. I've used this technique successfully for over 30 years.

I tried the impact wrench already. I started with the 3/8 and then went to a 1/2 inch, but I didnt try holding the fins with a rag. I'll give that a try.
