Look at the whole boat and maintenance records. If you really like it and everything feels right then go for it.

edit; My boat probably weighs more than the 230 01 your looking at as it is an 07 and full ballast (plus extra) with crew and we are around 5400#'s. Absolutely no problem with the 310 and performance.

wow, i am surprised to hear that. i had an 05 XStar with MCX and many was the time we had it overloaded to the point that it wouldn't plane off. then, i got the 14.25 X 14 OJ prop and she became a stump-puller. however, it took 25 seconds or so to get up to riding speed when it was slammed. i just traded for an L18 XStar and even then i had to purchase a power prop to get it to perform adequately when it is slammed with the factory and ProX ballast system. I would assume that the hull of an 01 230 VRS may not be as hard to get up on and hold on to plane as an XStar hull. since the rtp performs as well as experienced owners here say it does then i would say if the price is right it should be a go. good luck, but consider haiving it checked out by someone who knows boats very well--i.e. a dealership, even if you have to pay for a diagnosis and water test.

No ski boat is particularly fuel efficient, so unless you plan to load it with extra weight and go as fast as possible all the time, it should be OK. WOT is not a good way to try to save gas. If it has a multi-speed transmission, it would be a different story.

The TBI has a hump in the torque curve that some of the other motors don't, but the LTR only puts out 20 HP more than the Predator and it is torque that rotates the prop. The TBI has a bit of a turbulence issue at about 4300RPM, but aside from that, it works really well in the 230VRS.

I have a '98 200VRS - a bit smaller, with a similar engine. We don't run with ballast, but with 5 adults and 2 kids on board, it'll still pull the arms off a slalom skier. Three-skier pyramid? no problem. With the stock prop, I've seen 49 mph on the GPS on smooth water.

If you're planning on adding a ton of ballast and filling the boat to capacity with people then it might be a bit slow out of the hole, but really, I'd have to imagine it'll still do the 20 mph necessary for Wakeboarding without breathing hard.

Go for it.

I'm with Frank...I've got the '98 225 (basically same boat), mine has the 310 and it has never let me down...never not had enough power in the 3 years I've had it.

If the boat you are checking out is in good shape, don't think its underpowered for a second...I agree with others that if you were buying new, opt for the MCX.

Good luck!!!!
