Help my Boat wont start!

so I have a 1982 19 skier, with a ford 351, holley carb. The Boat starts great when i get to the lake. after running for a couple of hours (totally fine) ill shut the engine off to swim/relax maybe 30 min. then it wont start. engine will roll over but not fire. I went through all the carburator issues and that didnt help. Yesterday I brought a spark tester with me....there is no spark. The cap, rotor, and wires are new. It will only do it when the engine is hott...and if I wait for 20 min or so I can usually get it started again.....what do I do????

thanks a lot for your help!

Does your engine still have breaker points in the distributor?

Several years ago before I changed mine out to breakerless, my 79 experienced the same symptoms you are dealing with. The points were pitted and burned, changed them out and the boat started fine after that.....

could be... electrical probelms do tend to worse when hot due to expansion of metals (namely Cu) and reduced electrical contact... far from an expert here though i just know a little about metals

That may be true if you have an electronic ignition conversion kit, but otherwise the points may be stuck/corroded or common gasoline vaporlock!

What you are experiencing is VAPOR LOCK. If your FUEL SEPERATOR is mounted close to the motor it allowing the fuel to be heated. Rerun the FUEL LINE from the tank to the fuel pump. Mount the FUEL SEPERATOR on the side of the tank if possible. There is an EXTRA FLANGE on the drivers side upper part of the tank.

If you cannot do this...as soon as you are done driving the boat allow it to cool under idle. Do not kill the motor just after a hard ski run (HIGH RPM) Lift the motor box immedialty so the motor can cool faster. Then restart.

I have seen this happen alot in older boats.

Lets us know what happens

I don't think it's fuel related.

No spark when hot sounds like a bad coil.
They work again when they cool off. Soon it will not work at all.
