Trailer Winch opinions...

I'm going to add a winch to my trailer. Right now, all I've got is a turnbuckle, and it's a real pain to trailer the boat...

I tried mounting it to the angled 3" tube running up to the bow eye, but when it's mounted far up enough to pull the boat up/forward rather than down, the handle hits the boat and trailer. So, I need to mount it further from the bow.

I'm thinking about two different ways to mount the winch. The first is to add a piece of 3" square tubing at a 90 deg. angle to the existing tube, then mounting a plate to the top of that for winch mounting.

The second is to use a piece of 3" flat strap (maybe 1/4" thick). Bend it and weld it to the down tube in two places, then mount the winch to that.

So my question is: Which option to you like more? Or, if you have another suggestion, shout out!!!

This is how I did it on my old trailer. Worked really well for me.

Either method should work provided the strap is pulling parallel to the boat path on the trailer and not at a angle, but what do I know?

I agree. That's why I don't want to mount it low on the existing tube...

I'll have to think about that one. I don't really have a need for one, but it might be a nice-to-have...

I decided on the first option, but used flatstock so that I could still run the turnbuckle through it to lock the boat down. U bolts attach it to the 3" box tube.
