Tim, this isn't the answer, but do you remember which era it was that didn't have the right sized dipstick. For some reason, that crossed my mind this morning, and I wanted to be sure to order a new one if I needed it before changing my oil this year.

I thought that was the transmission oil dipstick.

You may be right. Do you remember what years/engine? Sorry to jack your thread, Tim.

Tim,
My Owner's Manual is for 1996 Prostar 190 and 205 it says LT1 Oil Capacity................4-5 Quarts with filter change Verify with dipstick Oil Type...........SAF 20-50 Racing oil I guess that means that if you don't change the filter its 4 quarts 5 if you do. |

John B,
Thanks for the help! I thought 5 sounded right but was starting to second guess myself. T |

Doug- before you order a new dipstick, why not call MC or a MC dealer and verify the part number? The short stick was an issue in '97 and/or, early '98. It was a GM problem and they didn't supply the right sticks based on mounting angle.

My 94 350 TBI engine came with the wrong dipstick.. I believe I got the correct dipstick # off this site a few years ago.. It was a 6 qt dipstick and sure screwed with me for a while until I got the correct one.... SO some of the engines out there are 6 qt capacity, not mine...... If someone can use it let me know........

Thanks, I just couldn't remember and didn't want to screw anything up. Again, sorry to get off topic (although I've seen it happen before).
