Help Me With My New 2000 MC ProStar190
I just purchased a 2000 MC ProStar 190 from Zacho's
in Eau Claire WI, and I'm totally JACKED! This is my first MC, but I've been around inboards all my life. I can pick up the boat April 30th, and I've been pushing the snow off of the cover since I signed the papers in March. I have a bunch of questions, so I'll put them in a list: 1. The boat has a heater, with outlets that come out of the dashboard under the windshield. Anything there that I should check out with the heater when picking up the boat? 2. It's got the Predator 310 HP engine with a 4-blade prop. Very clean inside. The tranny says hurst 1.00 to 1.03. Is that a 1 to 1 or Powerslot? 3. What is the little compartment on the floor by the drivers seat for, that has a drain plug? Is that supposed to show you how much bilge water you have below? 4. The motor is Mint, but there's a little rust under the exhaust manifold. What type of black paint should I use to touch that up? 4. Any other "features" or "bugs" with this boat that I should be aware of before I pick it up? Thanks in advance, I've learned a lot from all of you guys.... Jim... Who can't wait for open water in Chippewa Falls, WI... |

Congrats on your purchase!
I think the answer to #3 is... Cooler. Fill it with your favorite beverages and snacks, along with some ice.

Welcome to the board, unfortunately I'm in the "older" Mastercraft club, so I'm not familiar with yours, but I'm sure that you will get plenty of replies to all of your questions. I did know the answer to the cooler question though, but I was late getting in.

I had that boat but had no heater so I can't help you there
GREAT Boat! Excellent slalom wake and good looking too. watch the aluminum MC trailer wheels as they are a weak point, mine cracked & I replaced them with steel. Ask the dealer if he's done the recall on the Trailer Springs (this is critical) Thats a cooler in the floor and it's "cool". LTS ballast is really cool on that boat too. How many hours? perfect pass? If you see rust under the manifolds it's time to pull them for cleanup before you have a big problem For some reason a mechanic told me once that the gasket btwn the manifold and the exhaust elbow on top on each side was an issue and needed to be replaced???? FWIW mine had the same trans and it's considered 1:1 (not powerslot) Only other bug I can think of is to watch that your trap doors in the back don't blow open at highway speeds and be ready for the rope to get caught between them(real often if you do alot of course , stop/start skiing) Post some pics up asap man!!

i agree with the rope getting caught in the trap doors. also if you have speakers in the engine box watch those . the rope can get caught under the speaker grill , tear off the grill and lift the engine box up. i believe that is not a powerslot.

No perfect pass. And only 270 hours. I'll post pics
when the snow melts and it sits in my driveway! Thanks for the tips. Jim |

Congrats on the purchase! I have a 1999 so maybe I can be of help.
1. The vents under the windshield in mine aren't connected to the heater - they draw air straight from the vents in front of the windshield. When it's actually foggy they usually just make things worse by fogging up the inside of the glass too. 2. Another way to tell if it's a Powerslot is by prop size. 1:1 transmissions run 13x13 props, 1:5s run 18x20. Also, what Ric said on the leaf springs. Good luck and may the ice melt soon for us! |

Congrats on the new baby!
My feedback is that the rust on the manifold is probably normal. I ride with with many other guys some that even have 05 boats and the center two ports on the manifold get hot and bake the paint off and then rust. I would not think you need to take any drastic action. Just touch them up with some hi-temp paint when you get a chance but realize it will bake right off again soon. (I've heard that over time, the engine 'breaks-in' and will not run as hot and it will stop baking the paint but all the boats I ride in are mostly pretty new with low hours so I've not seen what happens over time with them yet.) Nothing to worry about. Just annoying and the one embarrassing part when you are showing off that big beautiful engine to friends. Best of luck - you'll love that boat. |

Welcome JMO. I noticed you are from Chippewa Falls. I grew up there. I bought my first MC from the Eau Claire Ski Sprites. In fact the president of the club is now my parents next door neighbor. Where do you ski? I grew up skiing on Lake Wissota, primarily Moon Bay by the State Park. One year we skiied Moon Bay the first week in April. Lake Wissota was still frozen solid. I am guesing though you will probably want the ice to go out before you get the new boat in the water.
I will actually be in Chippewa this weekend for Easter and will probably go out and look at the 197 that is still in storage in my parents pole barn. My 2003 has rust on the underside of the exhaust manifolds. There is nothing you can do about that because of the high heat baking off the paint. In fact it took about a month of use before the paint finally burned off to the point where I wouldn't smell it anymore. Andyg |
