Thumbs up OJ Vs. Acme on X-30 2003 MCX 350 HP (For those that just want to know)

Hi all,

My wife and I have been doing far more cruising than skiing lately. "Why are you doing that?" you’re thinking.

Well, our 9 month old daughter "Ashley" loves to ride, with the wind blowing her hair.

I'll get a picture of all of us on the lake soon... But here she is at 8 months of age.

Well, now back to the reason I am posting this Thread.

I have been doing research on different props to determine best performance for my boat... Performance is always a nightmare, as each person always looks for particular items that one may consider import, and others may not.

What do I consider important?
LOTS of power, but low engine ware.

Low engine ware? Yes, I am trying to increase the engine life in my boat by reducing the RPM's @ cruising speed. Gas is not a driving factor, as no one that owns one of these boats is extremely concerned of gas rate conception. We all know power = lots of gas. Of course, we all watch how much gas we go through, but again, that’s not rate of consumption but more related to amount consumed.

My father always said “Get your foot out of the carburetor son!!!” As my brothers and I always liked driving the old Pickup with its 454 Bigblock… Those days were sure fun!!!

So, back on point.
Boat:
MasterCraft 2003 model X-30 with MCX 350 HP
Max RPM according to manual should be 4800-5200 (I prefer the 5200 #)

Location:
Cumming Ga. Lake Lanier http://lanier.sam.usace.army.mil/
Altitude 1071 msl = 3513.7 fsl
Temperature, 77 F
Water Temp, 78F
Humidity, 85% (Typical Ga Summer after a thunder shower)
Testing date: 5/12/2007

Testing Equipment on the boat:
RPM and Speed Measured by Perfect Pass Wakeboard Pro ver 6.4

I put a new impeller in the boat for the perfect pass system last week and did not take the time to check it with my GPS... However, my top end speed has always remained the same with the OJ prop 42.2 MPH so it should be VERY VERY close if not dead on...


Sorry for the crappy CHART below... when I copy my excel or word chart (which look good I think) into this thread creation tool it will not allow me to format the table... I am sure there is a way, but its late and I do not want to take the time to find it tonight.

I have spoke to Jim @ Acme Marine e-mail @ http://acmemarine.com/html/contact2.asp

And Acme has been very helpful in letting me try the ACME 1039 on my boat.

What have I learned?
I like POWER.

The prop did exactly what Jim told me it would do, it lowered my RPM's allowing for a far better cruising condition. "Quieter" less, engine noise.

However, I had to sacrifice a lot of my power with regards to hole shot etc.... More power sacrifice than I wanted.

So, I will be sending the ACME 1039 back and swapping it for the ACME 845. @ which point I will update this positing with the latest technical data for all of you to draw your own conclusions.

Ohh I forgot to mention, the ACME 1039 was quieter "no cavitations", far less right steer chatter @ high speed > 3500 RPMS and what I am guessing is vibration.

My OJ prop is the factory original, so I guess a rebalance is needed but I have never hit anything and the prop looks to be in GREAT shape.

Well, I will keep you posted on my findings.

Please keep us informed on your findings. I have a 2002 X30 with the L-18. Talk about power, that engine is a monster. I am currently running the new OJ XMP 13.5" x 17.5". The hole shot with this prop/engine combination is amazing. Wide Open Throttle is around 5,200 RPM but I'm doing almost 50 mph at that RPM. I rarely open it up because the lake we are on is choppy all the time and the X30 does not do well in heavy chop.

The difference you see in RPM to MPH is due to the Acme prop being 1.5" of pitch higher. If you try our OJ 13.7 X 19.5 against the Acme 19.5 your numbers would be much closer. Comparisons are great as long as they are like props. I would be happy to send you an OJ for a true trial. Although I would not suggest a 19.5 on the MCX motor as it keeps the max RPM below the prefered number. Imight look at a 13.7 X 17.5 to reduce the RPM but keeping it within the range.

I have a ACME 845 that I have used 2 times for sell.

I went with the ACME 1479 14.5x14.25. I have an 05 X-30 and wanted more hole shot. I tried both the 845 and the 1479 and I liked the 1479 better. I did not take any numbers down so I can't provide a direct comparison.

The 845 is a 13.5 X 16. So it would not compare to the 13.7 X 17.5 OJ part #456.

I was able to test several different props thanks to both ACME and OJ prop company's for letting me try the product to see if I could reduce RPM's and hold enough power to still play.

My results

Thoughts:
The Acme 1479 (14.5 X 14.25) Performed best overall but only by 1 aspect, vibration.

When I compared the ACME 14.5 X 14.25 to the OJ 14.25 X 14.5, I LOVED the power on the hole shot and over all power performance of both props. The TWO issues I had were the following:

Over rev on ACME 14.5 X 14.25
OJ 14.25 X 14.5 had a small vibration at 1000 – 1100 RPM’s that caused a low pitch hum for the ears that you could feel through the floor of the boat. I found the vibration issue the bigger of the two, as I never run at WOT.

I believe most users would not notice the vibration; however I spend a lot of hours in my boat and pick up on different noises very quickly. My brother took a minute to notice it when he went for a ride to confirm the vibration. We both inspected both props for vibration/noises to make sure one was not hearing something that the other could not pick up on.

At the end of the day, I need to remember that I'm not sitting in my MC 205 with 310 HP on a LT1 corvette motor. That 2200 Lbs boat would SCREAM. But, its time to make room for more family members and slow down to wakeboard a while. (I guess I'll get another 205 in a few years to go slalom on.) Just have to be an older, much cheaper one as all my money is tied up in the X-30. LOL

I hope this info above helps someone out.

Ohh yea, forgot to mention...

Stepping up to a bigger pitch to reduce my RPM's stole all my power... No fun trying to get out of the hole with family in boat and throttle at wide open position while your dad sits behind you saying, "I thought this thing had 350 HP"...

LOL lesson learned; I would rather through them back in the seat.

Interesting anecdotal testing...and I am glad you found a prop that fits your needs. However, for those of you prop shopping there are many variables that are not taken into account or mentioned here (temp, humidity, current, wind, amount of fuel on board for each test, blower running, bimini out or in to name a few...) so please be careful when judging one manufacture against another. Both Acme and OJ build good products and offer above and beyond customer service...so please look hard. Lastly, when judging props most people are looking for acceleration numbers like time over distance, time to speed or distance to speed so take a hard look at those numbers when shopping as they matter greatly in tow boats sports.

Having done my own side by side and then having put pen to paper to present some sort of cognizable results, I can vouch for the fact that the variables are just about enough to drive you nuts. Then there are the factors that you just have to make a "feel call" on. I'm glad I had the chance to do it, but I wouldn't want to do it again. Best thing is to just give both (all) manufacturers a spin and see what works best for you, on your boat, on your lake, on that day of the week, etc., etc.
