It's too bad Land Rover got away from the utilitarian vehicle, that's what attracted me to them in the first place, 100% purpose built with no frills. The Discovery is nice with the luxury additions, but it still sits on the same basic chassis that it's predecessors did.

Ric - I owned a 00' 1500 w/ a 5.3 gas. It did a great job pulling my 02' Prostar 209 all over the Midwest. We even loaded it down w/ a Lance 845 P/U camper drove it in 3rd gear and it never once choked going up and down hills or down metro freeways.

Currently pull my 209 w/ an 04' Tahoe w/ a 5.3. Does a great job loaded w/ the family, love it.

The transmission guy at the dealer (yesterday) told me that the Fs are ok?? But he was standing next to a salesman when he said that.

Good, what axle ratio is your tahoe?
I bet the tahoe is roughly the same dry weight as the 1/2 ton crew

Reason I mention it is that I have a rancher buddy who gets a couple of new super's every 2 years & they truly USE them for pulling large loads on and off road. After replacing 3 auto-tranny's in one (02 or 03, I cannot remember), they swore them off and now buy only manual trans and of course swear by the power (which I cannot argue). I'm no ford-man but those Super Duty's are STRONG!

I guess I kind of evolved into a ford guy after I bought a new 86 Mustang 302. The last two cars (88 F 150 302 and 98 Explorer 6cyl) pulled the Nautique alright. Both got traded at about 115K miles with no problems. The last manual trans I had was in that mustang. It was strong, never pulled with it but it was strong..

I have a friend that used to work for Ford,We were just talking about their trucks and tranny's. He said he saw all sorts of tranny problems and would only recomend a manuel.
