Most of the time we go to El Vado, but like to mix it up and find the best place for any time of year. El Vado is always really low for Labor Day and we trashed a prop there two years ago. The North Valley in Alb, VERY NICE!!!
Anyways, for lakes in NM I prefer Conchas and Navajo, absolutely hate the Butte. I was there last year and got a ticket that ruined my fun for a long long time, and reluctantly went back over the weekend and this is what happened.. I'm afraid my season is over =(.
Also, I agree before mid June the wind is horrible here, but if you go to Santa Rosa and ride in the channel, it makes for some pretty nice water regardless of wind (but the bass fishermen get REALLY mad, haha!)

The butte is the worst. We've made that trip once in the last three years and I hit a rock skiing and fortunately only tore up my ski real bad and not myself or the boat. We did the same as you at El Vado two years ago on Labor Day. Luckily for us it was only prop and drive shaft. Those pictures hurt to look at.

It is the old 5.4 litre we were not able to hold off for the 2011 5.0 that replaced it. Wifes truck i drive a challenger hemi R/T.
