I think they typically allow a gap behind them for water to help keep them cool.

I have some and the lakes near me are dirty. Mine are blue Yes there is a gap because the mounting surface has feet to space the back of the light 1/8" or less between the hull and the light. The center foot has the wire that runs to the inside of the boat. That footing gets sealed as well.

Yeah they are bright. I did a lot of research and the BulletLines lights are brighter than the Abyss lights. Lumans power crap that I do not really understand says that they are brighter. Warranty was the same I think so I clicked BUY and installed them.
