Question about Carburator

I have a 1993 Prostar 205 with a 351 GT-40 285 HP.
Here is the problem. When the engine is cold, I make a short run before pulling someone. When I fill my ballast, sitting with the engine off. I have to make another run before pulling someone because the engine will stall. ( Like it is cold again ) The other day we took it out after it has been sitting for about 45 days. The stalls were a real problem. With no ballast it works fine, but when loaded it would take a while to stop stalling. Once it was running good it worked fine until the engine was shut off, and some time went by before starting again.
I have a little knowledge of engines. I am wondering if the carburator is in need of rebuilding or replacing. Anyone have any input.

I have a '93 Prostar 205 aloso, same engine same carb.

I had read about all the problems so when mine started acting up I found Holley on the web and called them. They have a tech rebuild department. I sent mine to them and they got it back to me in about 2 weeks. Completely rebuilt and bench tested. I put it on and it ran like new. Cost was about $300.

Float Adjustment

Being that your motor already sits on a angle.Approx 12 deg, Adding
alot of ballast to the stern even greatens that angle. The boat needs to displace more water. Not all ballast should be added in the stern. Under the bow, sides of the motor box etc. With all the weight in the stern you will see that you need to go faster just to get the "FROTH" off the edge of the wakes...anyway. It is very possible that the FLOATS in the bowls need to re readjusted for the amount of fuel in them because of the added angle. I would not attempt this myself unless you are a carb expert. Consult a pro on this one. I have seen this problem arise on older carburated boats when to much ballast is added. It can be corrected.

Same boat. Had a ton of trouble with the stock carb (Holley 4010). If you read back through the posts, you'll see all the specifics on it. Full professional rebuild did nothing for the stall problems. Replaced with a Holley 4160 and it has been smooth sailing ever since. Cost was $429 (plus $12 for new fuel line) from skidim plus about $75 for my local auto mechanic to bolt it on. Had to adjust the idle a bit, but it's been a dream. Wish I'd never wasted the money on the rebuild.

I have a 4160, Marine Carb that I ran on a GM 350 block in an 88 Mastercraft. Thought I had a carb issue and turned out to be something else. This carb is for a Ford motor. Should still work.
