Reverse noise

Do all 96 PS190 make a noise when in reverse, or older MasterCrafts for that matter?. It is like a whistle or something. It does not act up or anything. It runs perfectly. I am just curious because some friends of ours have a 2002 MC197 Tournament boat and it does not make this sound. This is our first MasterCraft and we have owend it since August of last year.

I have an 88' PS 190 that does make a whislte type sound in reverse. I was told it was normal and not to worry about it. JimN would be the best one to answer that question, and give an explination as to why it makes the sound

Thanks, I was hoping it was normal.
I wonder if it is similar to when you backup quickly in a car and it makes a whining noise. I think it has something to do with the shape of the gear. This is not the same noise but may be caused by something similar.

I can't think of an inboard I've driven that didn't do this.

To me, this forum is about love of inboard boats. It is about the sharing of information and, on a good day, some humor. It is not about post count, brand of boat, or any other superfluous labels that lend themselves to a false sense of superiority. Please, respect one another, try to pass on accurate information, and keep your eye on the ball.

I kind of like the noise. It lets me know what my wife, or driver, is doing while I'm in the water.

Kind of like the warning sound the garbage trucks make when they back up.

Or that sound of hydraulic motors sucking air before you touch 200 yards short of a runway...
