2008 mini tower ? Little help.

Hi Guys,

The piece Iím pointing to is the bottom front driver side tower leg. What is under this clamp and the same above? Is it a seam? How do I thighten this portion of the tower? I assume the clamp is not for decoration but is it my tightening point? Itís not loose where it attaches to the deck.

Sorry I donít have a lot of tower experience. Also what is my tower? ZFT3?

I believe those pieces hide where it's welded

At least that is what I was told when I asked the question

Was never brave enough to take them off to look.

There is a special tool to tighten the lower section....kind of a C shaped tool with 2 pins

WHOA! what the heck? How and where does this get used. Come on I thought I had to tighten an allen bolt and get out of there?

$286.00 I'm all about specialty tools but.............

Has anyone removed the clamp I'm pointing to? How is this leg attached to the base? there has to be an OEM PDF file of one of these things around???

Yes, that is the ZFT3. That clamp is just decorative to hide the weld seam.

To tighten the lower leg, the tool you need is called a spanner wrench. It has a pin that will go in one of those holes below your finger and allows you to twist the lower section to tighten it. Beware, it can mark up the soft aluminum, I have a small section of thin sheet metal I put under it to protect the tower leg.

MC has a cool billet aluminum version of the tool, used to be available at Great Lakes Skipper at like 10x the price if you'd rather go that route!

First thing I thought of was, fancy spanner. Thanks! I suppose it can be over tightened also? So don’t twist it to hard?

I'm not sure it can be over tightened. I crank on mine pretty hard. I wish there was a way to get some lock-tite in there, mine loosens pretty easily. I keep the spanner in the boat and snug it pretty often. Pretty amazing how much the tower stiffens up once you get those front legs tight.

I think when I bought mine back in 2010 it was in the low 200's

The dealer should have one so if your close to a dealer it would be cheaper to let them snug it up

It's one of those tools that you hope you don't use to much but as tower designs change over the years a tool like that will be non existent when you need it or 2000 dollars instead of 200
