X23 7.4L Prop Shaft

Has anyone had prop shaft problems on a 7.4L? Mine busted near the V-drive and prop shaft shot out the bottom of the boat, never to be seen again. Got lucky that boat didn't not sink, it was taking water in extremely fast. Attached is a pic of the broken shaft. Boat has 139 hours on it. Is this a power problem? A misalignment from when they did the 100 hour service? I am running a 1000lbs of steel shot, the 3000lbs of factory ballast and at times will have 10-12 people in the boat as well, so I am well over 5000lbs of ballast at times, boat has plenty of power, but wondering if it is just to hard on that drive shaft? Ideas?

If I was an Engineer at MC, I would gladly take that coupler back, and have it looked at, check the Rockwell hardness of the shaft, make sure its not a supplier issue, not then design issue, maybe a larger diameter shaft is needed, less pitch prop. Give you a new replacement shaft & prop. See if it happens again...hope it doesn't. If it does then some limits need to be stated on the ballast loading. Like you say, got lucky you didn't sink. But if I was you, maybe just a 1000lbs less of ballast, for your own sake, your the captain.

Just snapped while underway? Surfing? No debris or running aground or unusual vibrations?

How did you get her back to shore? .Glad you were able to do so.

I had my shaft snap on mine this year and it was a misalignment issue. I didn't lose the shaft or the prop. It was almost as if the engine settled on the mounts a bit cause it was off a few degrees.

Dealer had me back up and running for the next weekend.

The Nautique G's had a big issue with shafts snapping with 100 or so hours on them. Two of my 4 neighbors with G's had this happen to them.

If you are expecting warranty to cover this, I'm not sure I would be posting that you clearly overweighted the boat, which may give them an excuse to deny the claim.

Yes it snapped going out about 25mph heading back to dock to get my wife. That's where I was lucky it had enough rpms and just shot out the boat. We didn't hit anything. Had a buddy on the water with me and he rushed over. Used his 8.3 pump inside the engine compartment while he towed me in. We were only about half a mile from the dock. Got it on the trailer and it drained water for 5 minutes. Was pretty scary.

No vibrations or anything. Engine just started free revving I threw it in neutral and the boat came to a stop.

I had to fight with them but they warrantied it in August. My concern is if it does it again. They wanted to try and say I hit something but the strut and rudder had no damage to them

Interesting Dave. What was weird to me is that coupler in the picture is how it came out of the boat and 1 of the nuts holding the coupler was different. Almost like someone was adjusting alignment and dropped a nut below the fuel tank and threw on a different one. I find it hard to believe that the factory would use a different nut on something that is a rotational mass. I am the second owner. I think dealership screwed something up on the 100 hour service before I bought it
