1991 Prostar 205 engine
Picked up a used and abused 205 from my in laws and I am going to have it restored. The engine definitely needs work. Problem is I have no idea where to start. Since it's a 351 do I go to a car guy or a marine guy to have the engine assessed? Thanks.

Where in the midwest are you abouts?
I accept donations in the SW chicago burbs of abused boats. No questions asked. |

You can go to a car guy but they have to understand the differences between marine and automotive engines. What kind of work does it need?

Multiple oil leaks. Midwest put in a new exhaust (in laws had put in white pvc pipe) and fuel line last year. Thought be labor was a little steep. All the dealers around me just sell/service outboards so I'm trying to find out options. Doing a full carpet/upholstery this winter.

welcome!!!
if you can post up some pics of the engine area that would help... if multiple leaks then most likely will need to have the engine pulled... Then depending on what you want to spend you can have Midwest look at it and give you an estimate... but anyone with a engine puller and time can probably get it out and put the parts back together again aside from specific parts electrical, it is just a motor from an oil seal stand point... |

I'll give you my process on this, fixing oil leaks is something I'd do after getting the engine checked out/fired up. Doing a compression test on the engine should be very easy and could be about any shade tree mechanic (or you). If it has bad compression Id be taking the motor to an engine guy not a dealership. And he'll do the seals. If good compression and runs well I'd probably let the dealership do that job or do it myself. |
