Shark fin for GPS and Satellite offset on Dodge and Chevy - why?

Hi everyone - happy holidays.

I have noticed that the new Dodge and Chevy trucks have their GPS shark fin antenna off to one side .... I think it looks, well ..... not good.

I guess I like mine centered .... but is there a reason they do that?

I think it makes an otherwise nice truck look ..... crooked.

Anyone else?

If this post upsets anyone, that is not my intention .... just noticed and wanted to ask the TT braintrust.

My guess would be that the center of the road is less likely to be covered by trees. Thus moving the antenna to the driver's side results in a better signal. That's all I got.

One of those life mysteries.

From a cost point of view, less wire to reach the antenna equals a savings in cost of goods. Something an engineer thought up I'm sure when looking to save pennies on each, but many dollars on millions.

They saved 25c per truck using a shorter cable. Multiply that by trucks produced in a year and that equals someone at GM getting a fat bonus for coming up with the idea.

Great answers everyone ..... does it bother anyone else?

On my F-150, it is not a shark fin but more of a puck and that is off set as well ... but on my sedan and crossover the shark fin is centered on the roof line.

Oh well, Symmetry must be passe'

I would have to agree with that logic. Besides, being close to 7ft off the ground, not too many people will complain about it not being in the center when they cant see it.
Now, why does a car not have it offset on the driver side as well? Probably because the sales manager is short and saw it offset to the side and requested it be moved to the center.

The fin started with the early Onstar systems and has not been redesigned since. Others look different as they do not all have cell service as an option.

Doesn't bother me. Actually forgot it was there until you brought it up.
