Help! Looking into this boat! Prostar 205

Hey guys, i'm new to this forum, but was hoping I could get some advice. I have always grown up around boats, but this would be the first boat I would personally own. My dad is selling the boat we had in the family when I was in high school, and is offering it to me for $8,000.

It is a 1995 Prostar 205, with the Corvette engine. Has a tower, and has always run really well for us as long as we have had it (since 2007). The boat is really well taken care of and we have never had a problem with it. Everything seems great, except... He told me it has 5928 hrs on it. I about fell out of my seat! Is that even possible?? According to my research that is like unheard of! Is it possible that isn't reading correctly or something? The engine and boat seems to have always been really well taken care of and a mechanic by my dad said it looks to be in really good shape.. But that seems insane, is that too many hours?

I have attached a few photos for you to look at. Sorry they are kinda random, they're all I could find.

Any advice would be very appreciated!

5900 hrs? that's 280 per year.. did he leave the key on? Key on will let meter run.

accept for updating the graphics - I would go for it.

Are you sure it's not 592.8 hours?

That seems impossible. I'd take it to a dealer and get some testing done on the engine.

The fact you know the history of the boat and how it was maintained is more reason to buy it vs a strangers. I live on a lake and I'm out multiple times per week and I don't hit 280 in a year. Something doesn't add up but it would scare me because of the known history of it.

Could it be 592.8? That would seem more reasonable. If it is older analog gauge, there may be a tenth digit on the far right of the readout. I also agree that if you know the history and there has been no abuse, then that is great piece of mind to have. With a 21 yr old boat, something may still go wrong with it, but less likely if it has been taken care of.

No way it has that many hours on it. That would mean he ran it every minute for 16 years plus. I don't even think it is possible to leave the key on and have the battery last long enough to read those hours. The hours roll when the key is even if engine is not running.

I'd buy it. 8K is a steal. You could probably get 14K for it if the hours were debunked.
